Definition of Simantonnayana Sanskar
Simantonnaya Sanskar, or more commonly known as Shrimant Sanskar, is one of the Hindu rituals prescribed to be performed during pregnancy. The term “Simantonnayana”, when broken down, refers as: - Simant = Parting of hair - Unnayana = To uplift, elevate, or protect When put together, it signifies a ritual intended to protect and uplift the mental and emotional state of expectant mother. In Hindu traditions, Simantonnayana Sanskar is also classified as Garbh Sanskar, or prenatal rites. This sanskar is specifically designed to be performed after conception and before birth, recognizing pregnancy as a sacred and formative phase of human life.
Shrimant Sanskar Procedure
- Sankalp : The Simantonnayana Sanskar begins by a Pandit taking a Sanskalp on behalf of the couple. In it, the names, lineage, and family details of the expectant parents of the child are formally stated, along with the intention of performing Shrimant Sanskar. Taking a Sankalp spiritually establishes the ceremony and aligns it with Vedic traditions.
- Pujan & Mantra Recitation : After taking the Sankalp, a traditional Pujan is performed. Firstly, Lord Ganesha is worshipped to remove obstacles, and it is then followed by prayers to the Navagrahas. Lord Vishnu is also invoked for protection and sustenance for the unborn child. Vedic mantras are chanted throughout this stage to create a calm, positive, and sacred environment.
- Simant Karma : Simant Karma is the main ritual of Shrimant Sanskar. During it, the husband gently parts the hair of the expectant mother three times while the Pandit chants Vedic mantras. Typically, the husband uses a Porcupine’s spike, Pipal & Fig tree’s twig, kusha grass, and a yellow wool thread for the hair parting. Doing this symbolizes the removal of mental disturbances and invoking divine protection, peace, and positive energy for both mother and child.
- Blessings : After the Shrimant Sanskar is completed, elders and family members offer blessings to the mother. Blessings are also given to the unborn child, praying for a long life, intelligence, and virtuous nature.
