When is Karnavedha Ceremony Performed?
Typically, Karnavedha Sanskar is performed during infancy or early childhood, ideally: - In the 6th and 7th month - Or in an odd year of life (3rd, 5th, or 7th year) While traditionally it was performed for both boys and girls, in modern times it is more commonly retained for girls. According to tradition: - The right ear is pierced first for boys - The left ear is pierced for girls The starting ear for different genders corresponds with energy channel in one’s body in Ayurvedic and Yogic traditions.
Karnavedha Sanskar Procedure
The Karnavedha Ceremony involves specific rituals perfomed under the guidance of skilled and verified Pandits:
- Sankalp The parents, with the help of Pandit Ji, express their intention to perform the ceremony for the child’s well-being and to seek divine blessings.
- Ganpati Puja Worship Lord Ganesha to remove obstacles and bless the ceremony. Also invoke and get blessings from other gods such as Lord Surya, Goddess Saraswati, and the family’s Kuladevata.
- Ear Boring Ceremony A skilled practitioner performs the ear piercing under Pandit Ji’s supervision. Either a gold or silver ornament is inserted into the pierced earlobe. Specific vedic mantras are recited during the ear boring ceremony.
