Why is Ghatasthapana Puja Important in Navratri?

In Chaitra Navratri Ghatasthapana Puja holds immense importance as it establishes a spiritual connection between the devotee and Goddess Durga. It serves as a powerful symbol of kicking off Navratri, a festival dedicated to celebrating the divine feminine through Shakti Sadhana. Kalash Sthapana creates a sacred space within the home, allowing devotees to immerse themselves in worship and devotion for the next nine days. The sprouting barley seeds that were carefully nurtured during the festival, symbolizes Goddess Durga’s nurturing nature and growth of devotion in the hearts of her followers.

Ghatasthapana Vidhi Samagri List

The Ghatasthapana Puja Samgri list is as follows:

  • Wide and open clay pot to sow Sapta Dhanya
  • Clean soil to sow Sapta Dhanya
  • Sapta Dhanya or seeds of seven different grains
  • Small clay or brass pitcher
  • Ganga Jal to fill the Kalash
  • Moli/ sacred thread
  • Scent (perfume)
  • Supari
  • Coins to put in the Kalash
  • 5 leaves of Ashoka or Mango tree
  • A lid to cover the Kalash
  • Raw rice known as Akshat to put in the lid
  • Unpeeled Coconut
  • Red cloth to wrap coconut
  • Flowers and garland
  • Durva grass

Kalash Sthapana Puja Vidhi

  • Clean the puja room or area where you plan to perform the Ghatasthapana Vidhi.
  • Take a pitcher with a large mouth made of mud or copper and fill it with soil while sowing seven types of grains in it. While sowing the grains, mantras dedicated to Lord Varuna are chanted.
  • Use another set of soil and make a thick square or rectangle bed with a thickness of five or seven centimeters in the puja room or area. Grains are sown on this too.
  • A photo of Goddess Durga is placed in the puja room near the thick square of sand bed. Nirvana Yantra is placed near the picture along with the pot of mud.
  • A copper, silver, or earthen pot is made to be the kalash pot. Fill it with water, sandalwood or paste, flowers, durva grass, rice mixed with turmeric, betel nut, five leaves, and coins. All of these items are placed in the pot. An unpeeled coconut is then placed on top of the kalash.
  • Flowers are placed on the pot, painting, or idol.
  • Morning and evening lamps are lit and Aarti is performed. In some houses a lamp remains lit for all the nine days of Chaitra Navratri..
  • The mantras that are chanted during the puja can vary depending on family tradition and region. Some people simply prefer the simple Goddess Durga mantras.
  • Make sure that moisture is maintained both on the sand bed and in the pot with sand. For this, sprinkle a slight amount of water.
  • On the tenth day, the grains might have grown 3 inch or 5 inch and this is cut and given as prasad to family and friends.

Symbolism of Kalash Components

  • The Kalash Represents the Mother Earth, the physical, and the womb that nurtures life.
  • Ganga Jal Symbolizes the life giving water, purity, and the presence of all sacred rivers and deities.
  • Coconut Placed on top, it signifies divine consciousness, prosperity, and the head of Lord Shiva.
  • Mango Leaves Represent the five elements (earth, water, fire, air, & ether) and fertility.
  • Mauli Tied around the neck, it represents the divine force connecting the devotee to the divine.
  • Khetri Represents the inner spiritual journey, growth, and the potential of the soul.
  • Base Symbolizes prosperity and the foundation for growth.

Ideal Ghatasthapana Muhurat

The most auspicious Ghatasthapana muhurat is the first one third of the day while Pratipada is prevailing. If due to some reasons this Ghatasthapana muhurat is not available, then it can be done during Abhijit Muhurat.
