The Legend Behind Vastu Shastra

According to ancient scriptures, the origin of Vastu Shastra is linked to the legend of the Vastu Purusha. Once there was a war between Lord Shiva and a demon. During this heat-filled fight, a few sweat drops of Lord Shiva fell on earth. From the sweat emerged a gigantic spirit that went on expanding to cover the heavenly abodes of gods and demons. Scared of this spirit, all the deities went to Lord Brahma for help. The gods, led by Lord Brahma, subdued and pinned him down to the earth. Each deity occupied a specific direction on his body, forming what is now known as the Vastu Purusha Mandala. However, the spirit prayed to Lord Brahma saying he did not deserve this. Feeling empathy for him, Lord Brahma offered the spirit a boon that he would be known as Vastu Purush. People on Earth would worship him before building their homes. Their material prosperity would depend on his honor. That is why Vastu Puja and Griha Shanti Puja are considered essential before entering a new place. To seek blessings, remove obstacles, and ensure long-term peace and prosperity.

When to Perform Vastu Shanti Pooja?

You may conduct Vastu Shanti Pooja at home in the following instances: - When the building is designed against the Vastu principles. - According to Vastu, the layout of the room is wrong. - Buying or moving into an old or used house. - After staying in the same house for more than 10 years. - Facing constant instability and financial issues. - After the renovation of a home or office building. - While moving into the new house. - Coming back to the house after a long overseas stay.

Vastu Shanti Pooja Vidhi

Below is the step-by-step guide to perform the Vastu Shanti Pooja at home appropriately:

• Preparation of the Area : The house is cleansed and purified by sprinkling Ganga Jal all over the house. After that, prepare and decorate the northeast corner of the area to perform the puja.
• Kalash Sthapana : A copper Kalash is filled with Ganga Jal and covered with mango leaves and coconut. Place it in the general puja area.
• Ganesh Puja : Begin the Vastu Puja by worshipping the Lord Ganesha to remove all obstacles and ensure the successful completion of the ceremony.
• Sankalpa : The actual Vastu Pooja begins with taking a Sankalp. Take some water in your right hand and state your name, vowing to perform the ritual with utmost faith and dedication.
• Pran Pratistha : Chant the Vastu Pooja mantras to invite the divine energies. Offer items like rice, grain, and flowers to Vastu Purush and Mother Earth to bring peace and protection to the house.
• Worship of Panch Bhootas and Navgraha : Offer prayers to the five natural elements and the nine planets to maintain the balance in the environment and to reduce negative energies.
• Vastu Puja Havan : Set up a havan kund and lit up the holy fire. Offer sacred items such as ghee and herbs into the fire while reciting the Vedic mantras. This whole process helps purify the atmosphere and bring divine blessings from deities.
• Pit Nirmaan : Following the Vastu Pooja Havan, dig a small pit in the ground and put all the items used in the Vastu Puja in it. Seal the pit with sand to protect the offerings from being scattered. It represents the return of the divine items to the earth.
• Final Prayers and Aarti : Lastly, perform the aarti and distribute the prasad, seeking the blessing of Vastu Purush for peace, good health, and prosperity.
